Maine Bear Hunting
The Maine bear hunting season starts August 28 to September 23 for bear over bait hunting, and September 11 to October 27 for bear hunting with hounds. We maintain each of our many sites regularly with quality baits starting the end of July. Our area boasts a large and healthy bear population. It's common to have multiple bears visit each bait site during the season with many trophy bear to over 500lbs taken here. If you choose a bear hunt over bait you will be placed in a ladder type tree stand 10-20 feet off the ground. Shooting distances vary from 10-50+ yards depending upon which stand you hunt. If you prefer, you can also use your own tree stand and we also can set you up in a ground blind if heights are not your thing. Bait hunters will be in their stands about 2 pm, well before the bears come to feed. Bears have a keen sense of smell and awareness. It's important to remain motionless. Be patient, they will come. When they arrive it's really an awesome experience to watch a wild bear, you never know quite what they'll do. You may also see other Maine wildlife visit the bait. Hunters have watched Coyote, Bobcats, Fisher, Pine Marten and many other creatures from their stands. Transportation is provided from the lodge to your stand and back, unless you prefer to use your own vehicle. If you choose bear hunting with the hounds we'll be out the door early morning to strike a bear track either from the truck "rigging" or off a bait site. Once the chase has begun we will follow through the network of wood roads in our area via 4 wheel drive vehicles, keeping close enough to hear the hounds progress. All hounds are also outfitted with radio telemetry collars for convenience. This can be a very exciting hunt and the site of a bear treed or bayed on the ground by the hounds is an unforgettable one. We take pride in our bear hounds and they will be ready and able for your hunt. Bow hunters, hand gunners and muzzle loaders are welcome here. But you will need to practice your shots. Shooting downward from an elevated position for bear bait hunting and shooting up towards a treed bear for bear hound hunting. Gun hunters must practice also. Well placed shots are extremely important to ensure not losing a wounded bear. The kill zone on a bear is small compared to many other mammals. A wounded bear is usually very difficult to recover. All hunters PLEASE PRACTICE and know your weapon and take only sure shots! Although our hunts are not guaranteed, we do take pride in providing every opportunity towards ensuring your bear hunting success. Bear hunting is our specialty! We've been doing this successfully for decades. We are not a large scale bear hunting operation but rather a more personalized guide service.
