REVIEW Received 3/5/2014: I have been to DownEast Outifitters twice now. The first time was a couple years ago. We then tried a couple other outfitters in Maine that were closer to our home state of VT/NY. After terrible exeriences at the "other" outfitters we decided the drive was worth it and returned to DownEast in February 2014. Let me tell you I would drive 20 hours to return. Both experiences were exceptional and we will be back every year! Stan and Carolan make it feel like you have known them for 30 years. Stan does everything possbile to get you rabbits! Carolan should be a chef at a five star restaurant. There is not enough room to write all the positives, absolutely nothing negative about both experiences. Bottom line if your looking for a great outfitter, look no further!
REVIEW Received 3/8/2014: (WHY I WENT) I have booked snowshoe hare hunts in NH, VT, and Maine prior to being a guest at Down East. I was asked to go with a hunting party of 6 hunters by a friend for a three day hunt, he highly recommended Down East outfitters sense he had been there before. (ACCOMODATING) Mother Nature was not kind in dropping about 20 inches of wet heavy snow two days before we were to hunt. Stan contacted the group and made us aware the conditions were not good for optimal hunting with beagles and offered to re-schedule to ensure us a good time. We opted to go anyways and give it try. We arrived around 7pm and Stan had kennels ready to accommodate my hounds with water in the bowls. Introductions were made, and I felt right at home immediately. Stan had one of his areas he utilizes for guiding these type hunts plowed, just to ease efforts in getting to optimal spots. The road he had plowed was at least 4 miles long with plenty of game covering the whole stretch both sides. (ORGANIZED & SAFE) Stan made our safety his priority, before the hunt began he explained why he gave us each a GPS tracking collar. His intent was to watch us as we positioned on the hounds to make sure we did not get to close to each other. If we did he also made sure we had radios so he could inform us of the unsafe condition. At each spot he would explain the terrain and typically where the rabbit would run. He also accompanied us the whole time. Fed us lunch every day and assisted keeping track of our hounds as well as his. (MEAL TIME) Meal time after the hunt: Bring your appetite because Carolan’s home cooking will knock your socks off right from the meal to the baked breads, cakes and cookies you will be served. Carolan offered to cook up some of the lands bounty we had harvested the day before. (Our Choice) I am glad we said yes, I didn’t know a hare could taste so good. (BOTTOM LINE) Down East Guide Service is family run and a top notch service that make your stay relaxing at camp and exciting during the hunt. I highly recommend this guide service for a “Wicked good time” Sincerely John Harrington New York hounds man ; Received 3/8/2014
